Motoring has traditionally been a male dominated arena. This has led to
a strong male orientation on motoring web sites. Our organisation recognises
that women drive and ride almost as much as men. Accordingly, we believe
that women motorists need to be properly catered for. Our policy regarding
women motorists is to take any reasonable steps necessary to promote any
of their special needs and to discourage any form of discrimination against
them. |

Authorities have successfully demonised "rat runners". However motorists
have every right to use public roads. It is extremely undemocratic to
close off "local streets" and use traffic calming without taking into
account the views of motorists who use those roads.
Using the term "local streets" is also of
concern as it may convey the message to children that playing on the
roads is acceptable. Anything which encourages children to put
themselves in the path of vehicles is irresponsible.
It is desirable to distribute traffic
throughout the road system to reduce congestion at times when main
roads cannot accomodate the traffic.
Steps need to be taken to address the
causal problem rather than simply making it worse - particularly when
another result is turning some streets into dangerous obstacle courses
which obscure the visibility of pedestrians, force erratic driving and
riding, and cause pain to sensitive drivers or riders.

Roads are the foundation of safe motoring. Currently European visitors
marvel at the high standard of the motorways close to capital cities
and comment that they have nothing of that standard in their country.
Unfortunately, those roads are like the
shopfronts in movie sets. If you travel into rural areas and even in
some parts of suburbia roads are of poor standard and are particularly
poorly maintained.
Funding for roads needs to be treated as a priority.

The road rules introduced in many Australian states in 1999 prohibit
driving in the overtaking lane - the right lane - of the highway if not
overtaking.
Road safety is promoted if everyone uses
the same side of the road to drive or ride in one direction and the
same side of the road to drive or ride in the opposite direction.
Similarly, using the same lane on the same side when driving or riding
and the same lane to overtake also promotes safety. |

With today's communication technology there is no reason that vehicle
registration could not be administered privately. This would result in
more competitive and thus fairer prices. Car insurance companies could
tender for the work. Legislation can be put in place to ensure full
disclosure of car registration details to appropriate authorities. |
