Subject: Re 100km limit.
Sir
In Saturday's Tizer a survey stated that 9.8% of Country fatalities were due to excess speed.
Yet Sunday in the Mail the Police were calling for ever lower Country speed limits as the answer yet their own statistics show show this is not the case.
Boredom and inattention due to having to make a long journey longer could well be the cause of rollovers. As could cars travelling close together in conveys with drivers afraid to overtake even on clear roads.
Lastly if our roads are not safe in today's cars to travel 110km then put the $50 million raised in fines towards building some that are.
It is patently clear that while concentrating on speed has raised hundreds of million in revenue the failure to look at a the wider picture of the driving tests, road conditions etc. will mean continued failure to make the roads safer.
Ever lower limits on main highways will in fact make things worse rather than better.
