Unpublished letters to the editor
Occasionally letters are written to the editor which attempt to give the other side to a motoring related argument but are unpublished. Here are some examples:
A Harold Scruby article published in the Sydney Morning Herald resulted in this letter which attempted to debunk the argument put forward by Mr Scruby.
This letter responded to reports of a 25-4 vote in the West Australian upper house to trial a 120kph speed limit in some areas. Interestingly, after a speed blitz resulted in a death increase in WA, the Transport Minister Criddle somehow reasoned that this meant they shouldn't trial the limits??????
A letter to the editor in the West Australian deserved this letter in response.
This letter responded to a suggestion from SA police to have the freeway speed limits lowered in SA. Somehow they believed that this would benefit road safety.
This 1998 letter responded to newspaper comments from the SA Police Minister. When there speeding campaign resulted a huge increase in the road toll he tried to control the damage with some carefully chosen comments.
This letter responded to a "frivolous response" from an Unley (SA) Councillor to a news item where our SA Liaison Officer Harry Woods expressed concerns about pedestrian safety as a result of actions by the Unley Council. This was based on an arbitrary blanket drop in speed limits in the suburb of Unley with few roads being excepted and overseas experience where a similar move had resulted in an increase in pedestrian casualties due to overconfidence on the part of the pedestrians and inattention on the part of the drivers.
