Autobahns

The issue of the ultrasafe speed unlimited autobahns in the former West Germany often captures the Australian motorists imagination. In the aus.cars newsgroup Drive Sydney's James Wu wrote: "Time and time again, it must be said that speed is not necessarily the prime cause of accidents. The fact that autobahns do not have a horrific road toll demonstrates that motorists need not drive like snails on cannabis to remain safe." Below are some pictures of the autobahns. An autobahn picture from the former East Germany is also included. The speed limited 'East German' autobahns are not quite so safe to drive on.

An autobahn at Aichelberg. I believe that it has had some work done to it since this picture was taken- at least I hope so.

An autobahn getting the snow plow treatment. Someone commented recently that most of Australia does not have the same extremes in climate that they experience in Europe so raising our limits to European levels can be done without worrying about dangers caused by heavy snowfall.

This is a photo of an autobahn at Junction Rippachtal.
