Motorists' Association slams move to "hide" speed camerasThe Queensland Liaison Officer of the National Motorists Association Australia Inc., an independent organisation advocating motorists' rights and interests today condemned plans to put speed cameras in a wide range of vehicles."Authorities argue that less people are being caught by speed camera vans so they need to use different vehicles. However they always claim that they want to slow people down. if cameras in white vans result in people slowing down in general or slowing down near the supposedly dangerous locations where they site vans there shouldn't be a problem. Why effectively hide the cameras and encourage people to speed up?" asked Mr Wright. "The answer is clearly that the primary goal of speed enforcement is revenue raising not safety." Mr Wright said. Mr Wright also dismissed the explanation that a decline in detection rate in recent months has resulted in more speed related crashes this year. "Speed related figures are a statistical smoke screen used to conceal the fact that speeding causes only 4% of crashes. Because human lives are lost in crashes they need an excuse for wasting most police resources on a tiny cause of crashes. They need an impressive figure to excuse it. Simply stating that more than 9 in 10 crashes aren't caused by speeding wouldn't promote acceptance of their fund raising. They therefore fiddle with the figures to produce a larger number" he argued. "Speed related figures have little or nothing to do with people getting speeding fines. There are more speed related crashes this year because of the wet weather. Wet roads increase the likelihood that drunks who don't slow down for corners will have a 'speed related crash' and poorly skilled drivers can drive too fast for the conditions more easily on wet roads. The increase is not due to some sudden realization that speed cameras are in white vans after over 2 years of their use. That innuendo is just an excuse to make money" Mr Wright asserted.
