
Although speed humps have other implications such as pollution and increased danger the main thing most people associate them with is annoyance. There is nothing calming about traffic calming.
Someone recently commented to me that they beep the horn every time they go over a speed hump. Their line of thought was that if residents couldn't be bothered petitioning the council for the removal of the humps and he therefore had to put up with the annoyance then he'd share his annoyance by annoying the residents. Speed bumps were originally intended to slow people down and Compton bumps do that sensibly. However most speed bumps aren't Compton bumps.
